“Finances” ~ Part 1

Is Your Money Mindset Setting You Up for Failure?

People want to make money. You see the lavish lifestyles of celebrities and other famous people and wish you could have the same lifestyle yourself. But, is your drive for money blinding you to what is truly important in your life?

It is often said that if you do something you love, the money will follow. There seems to be something to this because you will approach whatever you love with passion. You’ll get better at it to the point where you are better than everyone else, or at least that is what you strive.

On the other hand, if making money is your driving force, how will you accomplish that? You will simply chase the dollar from one job to the next or from one opportunity to the next. You will get seduced by false offers of riches. Over time, you will look back and see that not much has been accomplished.

You may be successful in the short term of getting that extra dollar from a new job or squeezing a quick buck from your business. But, you will constantly be in search for more money. You could even put yourself into a position where you can’t handle the new job because you lack the necessary experience. In other words, you didn’t give your previous level enough time to develop a foundation. You jumped ahead, and now you are unclear what to do. It’s a concept known as the Peter Principle, named after the person who came up with the idea, Peter Drucker.

Money isn’t as important as many try to make it out to be. For instance, what good is having a high-paying job when you have to work 80-90 hours a week? What kind of life is that? Many people who do this, look back at their lives and wonder why they did it. While they may have a lot of money when they get older, they likely don’t have anyone to share it with. Another possibility is the heavy workload to obtain that wealth gets them to an early grave. The money they earned is useless to them if that happens.

If you are happy with what you are doing, money becomes a secondary priority. People do need money to live, and you shouldn’t settle to work for less than you are worth. But, when you can balance a decent amount of money with doing something that you enjoy, it will bring a whole bunch of satisfaction into your life.

ACTIVITY

11.1

Start a spreadsheet and track all of your expenses this week.

First, start a spreadsheet and track all of your expenses this week.

That seems very, very basic, you’ve probably heard this lesson before, but let me ask you a very profound question.  Have you done it?

If you have done it, have you done it recently?  I’m sure your expenses have changed in the last six months.  If you haven’t done this exercise in the last little while, now is the time to do it again.

Maybe you started spending a bit more money in a certain area that you just haven’t really realized and it’s costing you more than you want it to.

This will allow you to become consciously aware of where that money is going.  This basic spreadsheet will really be an eye-opener for you if you haven’t done it before, and even if you have, it’s always a great exercise to revisit.

“Optimism” ~ Part 1

Want to Be Successful? Be Optimistic!

You may be surprised to hear that being optimistic has some tangible benefits for your career. In fact, researchers have found that optimism has a real impact on the success or failure of your business, your likelihood of promotion, and even your starting salary.

Why would optimism have such a strong effect on how successful you are? Here are some ways in which your mindset can aid or undermine your career:

1. Attitude and expectations

Optimists tend to have a can-do attitude and are undaunted by difficult or problematic circumstances. They are natural-born problem solvers who expect to be able to get things done. Studies have shown that optimists are inclined to be clear about their goals and that this clarity helps them to prioritize and strategize a way to achieve them. We term this attitude, that you can do certain things in the future and that you can make those desires real, ‘expectancy judgment.’

2. Optimisminspiresconfidence

A recent study by the US Securities and Exchange Commission looked at business investment and whether optimism of company leaders influenced bankers and other financial institutions. The study found that financiers were more likely to approve loan applications to optimistic and enthusiastic businesspeople.

This ability to project confidence is why optimists also make inspiring leaders, successful salespeople, and entrepreneurs. They talk up their business or project and are full of ideas about how it’s going to work. Research has demonstrated that optimistic people routinely use positive language to describe situations, no matter how difficult. Problems are described as things that will resolve quickly, or as anomalous. Optimists are full of confidence that problems can be solved.

3. Energy

Optimists have a habit of radiating positive energy and are more productive than pessimists. They are full of ideas and plans, and they see opportunities everywhere. Optimists don’t dwell on past failures but are focused on the future. Being with optimists and being more optimistic yourself starts a virtuous circle of positive energy that lifts your whole team.

Psychology experts say that optimistic people are more likely to put extra effort into achieving their goals and that high optimism is a predictor of high effort and success.

4. Resilience

Optimism also increases your resilience, so setbacks are not disasters, but opportunities to do something differently. A negative performance review is not crushing or confidence-sapping, but a chance to position yourself better for the future. People with an optimistic view are better able to deal with stressful situations and tend to stay focused, not to get overwhelmed by difficulties or changing demands.

ACTIVITY

10.1

Record all of your big and small wins/successes this week.

First, we want to suggest you record all of your big and small wins this week. It might start with, like I said earlier, a tiny action that you took, greeting your spouse with love instead of being too consumed in your work or with FaceBook. That is a small win but it’s also big in the grand scheme of things.

Because if you do that every single day for years and years and years, it will create a more positive relationship.

So start tracking both your big wins and your small wins.

If you get a big deal in a sales job, great, note that.  If you get out of bed early to do your workout, maybe that’s a small win in your book, track it, write it down.

“Facing Fear” ~ Part 2

Facing Fear Quick Tips

Are you fighting monsters on a daily basis? What about grizzly bears, rabid dogs, or crazed goats. If so, then you depend on your internal survival system on a regular basis. This survival mechanism is called fear.

Fear is an instinct triggered by an external stimulus which then causes a series of physical transformations which are designed to help you escape danger to live another day. Some fears are instinctual while others are related to life experience.

For example, most people aren’t fond of snakes and many have a true fear of being around a snake. You won’t see these people in a snake charmer show.

Then there are people who instinctively sense that there is a snake nearby. Perhaps you are one of them. While pulling weeds in your garden, you picked up on an odd odour nearby and the hairs rose up on your neck.

The first time this happened you had no idea why you experienced this sensation. Then you looked left and saw a garter snake coiled on the rock next to the patch of daisies you were weeding. Now that you have an experience with this snake fear/ survival mechanism, the next time your hair raises on your neck while you work in the garden you’ll instantly realize there is a snake nearby. The fear of snakes is believed to be a fear that is literally “cooked” into our genes.

There are other categories of fear which are detrimental to our wellbeing. Phobias are one category that can cause you to have extreme reactions to situations, creatures, or activities. If you have a fear of flying then you are also going to have problems with travel.

Most people fly to a distant city or region for professional or personal reasons. Normally, this is faster than driving. However, if you have a true terror of flying then you have to find another reasonable alternative. Fear of flying can really put a lid on your professional opportunities should the role require travel.

Panic attacks are another category of fear brought on by a situation or event that causes one to experience an ultra-high level of anxiety. Someone experiencing a panic attack may be unable to catch their breath, have chest pains, nausea and other physical effects brought about by the extreme chemical and hormonal changes related to fear and anxiety.

The final category of fear is experienced by most people and it impacts the ability to live life to its fullest because the fear causes you to step back from a danger. The danger is usually a perception of a threat to one’s personal security and not so much a threat to their life.

If you are a worrier, you experience this type of fear. If you avoid situations because you are afraid of being laughed at or rejected, then you know this fear. People who are frustrated with their lot in life, but are afraid to venture into new experiences know this fear.

You can learn to manage these types of fears. In fact, people with severe phobias can overcome them. Sometimes these fears require therapy and medication. However, many people are able to grow out of their fears with a little education and by following steps to learn how to work through the fear.

If you are someone who wants to conquer the fears which are holding them back from abundant living, then you will benefit from the report “Facing Fear” which offers steps and tips to help you overcome fear.

specifically how they can hinder your progress.

Start thinking about which of these fears in your list are actually holding you back from the goals you’ve set for yourself in this program, thinking back to week number one.

List any fears that could potentially impact those goals and state why.

Let’s say you want to start a new business but you have a fear of talking to new people or approaching new people.  Starting a new business generally requires selling your idea, selling other people on what it is you’re trying to do.

If you have a huge fear of approaching people or meeting new people, that is going to be a huge problem.  So, here’s a fear that you can start looking at as something that you need to address.

Are you a negative person? Are you surrounded by negative people in your personal or professional life? Negativity can harm you in so many ways! It can stop you from seeing the potential that lies all around you, and it can thwart your reward of fulfillment.

On the flip side, reducing negativity in your life can have amazing and far-reaching beneficial effects that seem to ripple outward once they begin. These ripples will reach people, through you, that may not have been able to experience the benefits of positivity before.

Here are just a few of the many potential benefits of reducing negativity in your life:

Greater Confidence
Most negative thinkers do a lot of negative self-talk. This makes them feel small, insignificant, and unworthy of good things. When you eliminate this negative talk and replace it with positive uplifting talk you will see your confidence increase enormously. And when you have confidence, you can accomplish anything.

Greater Room for Positive Things
You don’t realize how much room negativity takes up in your mental, emotional, and physical lives until you begin to actively reduce that negativity. And once you do – you want all that “space” back! Because you can then fill that space with all kinds of positive things such as new friendships, new positive surroundings, and maybe even a new job! The possibilities truly are limitless.

Fewer Feelings of Depression and Fear
When you increase your positivity, your positive self-talk, and your confidence, you find yourself with greater feelings of adequacy. In turn, this reduces your

feelings of fear and depression, because you realize just how capable you really are!

Expanding Focus
When you’re stuck in negative thinking, you have a very narrow view of the world, people, and possibilities that surround you. When you work to reduce that negative thinking, you’ll begin to see all kinds of possibilities surrounding you that you weren’t able to see before. This can lead to amazing outcomes, as your focus expands, and you begin to have hope for better and greater things.

More Room for Love
When you are feeling confidence in yourself and your abilities, it gives you the space to give and receive love freely. No longer will you be tied to that negative self-talk and thinking that you don’t deserve love, companionship, or friendship. Now, you’ll see and feel more love around you. You’ll be able to receive that love, and you’ll be able to give it out whenever you want because it truly has no limits!

Worry can truly suck the joy out of any situation. Worrying – especially worrying about things we cannot control – is a negative feedback loop that just keeps going lower and lower until we’re stuck in a hole that we feel we just can’t get back out of.

But what’s the solution? We can’t just stop worrying, can we?

Worrying is a choice that you make, and there are those that do, in fact, learn to stop worrying. But it’s not an all-or-nothing proposition! Here are three steps that you can take starting right this minute to help you lessen the time you spend worrying so that you can spend that time living your life!

  1. One of the most effective tactics to use with worrying (or any negative emotion, in fact) is to give it a time limit. The worrying then does not go on endlessly without any self-control. When something has you worried, or a worry pops up into your mind, set a limit of an hour, or three hours… whatever you feel comfortable with. But when that time is up, that’s it. You move on. You don’t let the worry stop you from living if it’s past the time you give it. This is a technique that works great for depression, sadness, anger… any of those negative emotions that threaten to take us over if we’re not careful.
  2. Ask yourself if there is anything you can do about what you’re worried about. Many times, there are things you can do to help stop the worry, but you’re reluctant to do them. Why? Well, it could be that you’re afraid to step outside your comfort zone. It could be that you’re reluctant to take the actions you need to take to stop the situation you’re worried about. Fear plays into this a lot, so you have to ask yourself some hard questions, namely, “Am I willing to do what it takes to stop this worrying by changing my situation?” Whether the answer is yes, or no, you should quit the worrying.

3. Take a good look at the stories you tell yourself. You may be worrying about something that is simply not true, or not realistic. Very often, we tell ourselves stories about a situation, and when we tell ourselves the same story over and over, it becomes real to us. But it may, in fact, just be a story. So, take a look at your worries, and examine whether they are based on real facts and situations, or just old stories that you haven’t updated in your mind.

“Consequences and Change”

Consequences of a Bad Attitude

You may not realize it, but your bad attitude is going to cost you. In some cases, it could hurt others as well. Are you willing to accept the risk in exchange for keeping your bad attitude going? What good has it served you and will you try something different?

When people take on a bad attitude, they tend to be apathetic. They don’t care what others think (or so they say). They tend to withdraw from social interactions and don’t live as well as they could. Below we look at some of the consequences of a bad attitude.

Your general outlook on life is going to be poor. You think the world is against you, and you do everything in your power to avoid others or avoid interacting with others. You lose your friends, and you spend limited time with your family.

If you have a bad attitude, you will likely find yourself stressed out more than you should be. This stress is unhealthy and can prevent your body from fending off disease and so your bad attitude could cause disease.

You probably won’t be nice to other people. You end up saying the wrong things and hurting them. You may find yourself insulting others when you have a bad attitude. You will be irritated by everything they say and everyone you encounter.

Bad attitudes don’t work well in your work environment. It is something that could make you lose your job. What is worse about this situation is that you won’t realize why you lost your job, or you won’t accept that it was because of your bad attitude. Employers want people who look for solutions, and negative thinking prevents that from happening. In fact, you will look for reasons why everything won’t work.

A bad attitude usually makes a bad situation worse. If you find yourself in a legal situation, taking a bad attitude against law enforcement could give them reasons to make it difficult for you. When you are cooperative and have a good attitude, they will try to work with you to lessen the impact and reduce the charges. They may even let you go.

The consequences described here are not exhaustive. You can probably come up with more, but this should be enough to show you that you have a lot to lose by taking on a bad attitude. There is a reason for the old saying about how you catch more flies with honey.

ACTIVITY

3.1

Take some time to think of people who could potentially be your

“accountability partner”.

The actions this week are actually quite simple, but the profound effects over the long term will really change your life for the long run.

First of all, we’re going to talk about taking some time to think of people who could potentially be our accountability partner.

You’re going to have to brainstorm.  Who else in your life is success-oriented, is goal-oriented, is on the same kind of path as you?  Who is somebody you could share this 12 Weeks To a Completely NEW YOU Program with?

Show them what you’re going through and do their own goal setting and their own vision setting and you can become accountability partners for them.

You want to start thinking about people in your life.  Do that first and really sit down to think about who would be the best fit for that.

OBJECTIVE

Develop a Better Attitude

Life hasn’t gone the way you had hoped. You are in your same dead-end job, in a career you thought had some promise. But it didn’t turn out as planned. You believe it just isn’t on your cards to have that dream life. However, what could be the problem is not having the right kind of attitude. You may want to explore changing your attitude and see if that doesn’t result in the changes you need for the better.

The first step is to figure out if your attitude could use some adjusting. Do you find people trying to avoid you? Do you find that you get set off by the smallest incidents? You may have just ignored what people have told you about you having a bad attitude.

The next time you are involved in some incident that goes bad, ask yourself this question. Is this something that I was my responsibility? Go through the scenario from the perspective of an outsider observing you. Is there anything you could have done differently that would have changed the result? Think back to what you said and see if you were the one responsible.

You shouldn’t take the blame for everything. If you reach within and discover that others were responsible, then hold them to it. Just make sure that you have ruled out yourself as the culprit before doing this. If there are some gray areas, be willing to give in a bit.

When you go through this exercise, you will find you are in the wrong more often than you realized. Once you come to this realization, you can take steps to change yourself.

Don’t focus only on negative aspects of your life. Accept both the good and bad. Be proud of the good aspects and be willing to work on the negative ones.

Changing your attitude is a process. As such, it will take some time to readjust your thinking. You identify that you are not always right and will try to do what is necessary to avoid those activities again. When you do avoid them in the future, make sure you recognize that as an achievement as this is an important part of the process.

Expect others to recognize your changes when you commit to making them. Your attitude will change for the better just by going through the process described. You will live a happier life, and you will make friends much more easily. You should also expect your job to change for the better as your management will notice these changes as well.

“Purpose” ~ Part 4

How Volunteering Can Help Find Your Purpose

Volunteering is a rewarding experience. However, as well as helping others, it has the added benefit of guiding people to their purpose. When you see first-hand just how others are struggling, it gives you a different perspective on life.

Most experiences with volunteering will be fulfilling. However, the best ones to choose are the ones where you feel a connection. For instance, if you are someone who wants to help people find jobs or create businesses, try to find volunteer organizations who have that goal in mind. You may not get that much benefit if you choose a group dedicated to feeding the poor. Of course, these types of organizations do a lot of good and help a lot of people. But their purpose doesn’t sync with your goals of getting people jobs or creating businesses.

Many companies are expanding their roles by encouraging their employees to volunteer. These companies will often give employees extra time off if they use it to volunteer. However, if they are supporting organizations that some employees don’t agree with this can be controversial and cause problems. If this is the case with your company, speak with your boss and try to seek out alternatives that are in line with your beliefs.

Sometimes, volunteering experiences work out so well that people join the organization full time. Of course, this depends on the organization’s objectives. If they aren’t hiring, you may not be able to do this. However, non-profit organizations pay for outside services. You could form a company that provides products and services to the organization. It’s not the same as hiring. They are simply using your service just as they would any other outside service.

You are bound to meet other like-minded people when you volunteer, and so have the possible benefit of joining forces with them and growing your network. If you do decide a particular organization connects with you, this can help you grow the concept into something substantial.

Don’t lose sight of why you are volunteering. You’re not volunteering solely to enable you to find a new career path or purpose. It can happen as a natural progression the more you get involved. Helping people is the goal of most volunteer initiatives. That should always be the first and foremost priority.

Make sure your volunteering fits with your family schedule. If you put long hours in at work and fill up your weekends with volunteering activities, your family may take issue with this. Of course, it could be a great family activity to all do together.

~ Giving Back Exercise ~

ACTIVITY

12.4

Find a way to help the person or organization from Activity 12.3

These last two points I want to cover together, and that is to take some time to research either a person or an organization that really needs some help and find a way to help them.

There are so many good causes out there.  There are so many people struggling to make their life work.  They’re struggling for one reason or another.  Find something that is really in tune with your heart.  Find something you know you want to be involved with, at least solving part of the problem.

There’s no shortage of this.  You can go to YouTube, you can go to the internet, you can just look in your community for people that really need help.

It does a couple of things.  One, it kind of humbles you a little bit.  It helps you reconnect with things that you need to be grateful for, because part of this whole 12 Steps to a  Completely NEW YOU Program is pushing you.  Helping you get to a new level in your life.

You might forget to appreciate all the good things that you already have, because you’re working to get even better.

And that’s cool, but when you help other people it reconnects you too, “Wow, there’s a lot of people that have it a lot worse than me, and, A, I feel a lot more grateful, but, B, I can actually do something.  I’m privileged.  I have a gift or I have a skill or talent that can help this person.”

When you genuinely do this, when you genuinely help somebody that needs the help, you will feel an incredible sensation of reward.

You’ll feel proud of yourself, and when you see their spirits lifted it will only reinforce that feeling even further.  You take that feeling with you through your entire day, through your entire week, really.

So it makes you a better person and it makes you do the actions that you’re doing in your day-to-day work here to be a more successful person, it makes them more powerful actions as well.

So really take some time this week to do this. Find somebody or an organization that could really use your help and use all of your resources to the maximum benefit and watch how much it not only benefits them but you as well.

I hope you enjoy week 12, and thanks for taking our 12 Steps to a Completely NEW YOU Program.
